Background of the Study
Educational broadcasts in Nigeria serve as a primary medium for disseminating information and standardizing language usage among diverse populations. This study examines the effect of language standardization on Nigerian phonetics by focusing on educational broadcasts that aim to promote uniform pronunciation and clear enunciation. Such broadcasts are instrumental in reducing regional phonetic variations and fostering a common linguistic standard (Okeke, 2023). The research investigates how standardization processes impact vowel quality, consonant articulation, and intonation patterns. Through the analysis of broadcast recordings and viewer feedback, the study explores whether these educational interventions contribute to improved language proficiency and literacy outcomes. It also assesses the tension between maintaining local phonetic identities and promoting a standardized form of Nigerian English, particularly in a multilingual society (Afolabi, 2024). By providing empirical evidence of phonetic changes resulting from standardized broadcasts, the study aims to inform language policy and educational practices that balance uniformity with cultural diversity (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread implementation of language standardization in educational broadcasts, there is limited research on its impact on Nigerian phonetics. The enforced uniformity may lead to diminished recognition of regional accents and potentially affect students’ linguistic identity (Okeke, 2023). Moreover, the lack of systematic evaluation of phonetic changes in response to standardization hinders efforts to optimize language teaching methodologies. Variations in broadcast quality and regional reception further complicate the standardization process, raising concerns about the overall effectiveness of these interventions (Afolabi, 2024). This study seeks to address these gaps by examining the phonetic outcomes of standardized language broadcasts, providing insights that can guide future educational policies and practices (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the phonetic features of standardized language as presented in educational broadcasts.

  2. To assess the impact of standardization on regional phonetic variations.

  3. To recommend strategies for balancing uniformity with cultural diversity in language education.

Research Questions:

  1. How do educational broadcasts standardize phonetic features in Nigerian English?

  2. What impact does this standardization have on regional accents?

  3. How can educational broadcasts better balance standardization with cultural phonetic diversity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the effect of language standardization on Nigerian phonetics through educational broadcasts. The findings will inform language educators and policymakers on optimizing phonetic clarity while respecting regional linguistic identities. By providing empirical evidence, the research supports improved instructional methods and contributes to more effective language planning in educational contexts (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing educational broadcasts in Nigeria and does not extend to other media formats or informal communication.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Language Standardization: The process of establishing uniform language rules and pronunciation.

  • Phonetics: The study of the sounds of human speech.

  • Educational Broadcasts: Media programs designed to provide instructional content.
